Deishû was born into the Yamaoka samurai family. Upon his marriage, he was adopted into the Takahashi family. He was an expert of spear fighting and even had the shogun as his pupil. He was an important political figure in the final days of the Tokugawa military government and served as a minister. After the Meiji restoration in 1868 he went into retirement and quietly spent the rest of his days composing poetry and brushing Zen art. Deishû is regarded as the best calligrapher of the Three Shû (Deishû, Kaishû, and Tesshû).
