Nakabayashi Chikutô (1776-1853) Nanga Spring landscape in the style of Mi Fu (1051–1107)Signed: Chikutô Sanjin sha Seals: Seishô noin, Azana wa Hakumei Technique: sumi on paper 128 x 47,4 Mounting: bronze damask 209 x 61,6 Condition: very good Inscription reads: Shunnun shutsu koku, The clouds of spring streching out from of the valley Chikutô is regarded as a theorist of the Nanga School and is as such of great interest because at the beginning of the nineteenth century he introduced the conservative Nanga style to the Kansai area. Chikutô was the son of a Nagoya doctor, but at the age of fifteen he became a protégé of the rich collector Kamiya Ten'yû (1721-1801) at whose house he saw and studied Chinese paintings. With his friend Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856), he went to Kyoto in 1802. Chikutô moved between Kyoto and Nagoya for a number of years but in 1815 finally settled in his hometown. Chikutô belonged to the circle of the famous scholar, painter and calligrapher Rai San'yô (1780-1832).
