Chikutô is regarded as a theorist of the Nanga School and is as such of great interest because at the beginning of the nineteenth century he introduced the conservative Nanga style to the Kansai area.
Chikutô was the son of a Nagoya doctor, but at the age of fifteen he became a protégé of the rich collector Kamiya Ten'yû (1721-1801) at whose house he saw and studied Chinese paintings. With his friend Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856), he went to Kyoto in 1802. Chikutô moved between Kyoto and Nagoya for a number of years but in 1815 finally settled in his hometown. Chikutô belonged to the circle of the famous scholar, painter and calligrapher Rai San'yô (1780-1832).
