Zentei was born in Tokyo. Already as a young boy he studied with a number of Zen teachers and through them he learned about painting and became acquainted with Chinese poetry especially with the Sung poet Su Dongbo. He was not only active as a painter, but also as a calligrapher and seal carver.
Zentei’s son, a famous potter from Tsushima, published a book about his father in 1981.
