Ikeda Terukata specialised in bijinga, but worked in a modern manner.
He was a pupil of Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908) and fell in love with a fellow pupil, Sakakibara Shoen (1886-1917). Soon after their engagement, Terukata left Toshikata’s studio to study with Kawai Gyokudô (1873-1957). Terukata designed kuchi-e and bijin-ga and was a frequent exhibitor and prize-winner at the Bunten, Inten and Ugôkai.
