Tatsumaro was born in Fukuoka prefecture. He graduated from the Faculty of Arts at Otani University in 1935. He won a first prize at the Nitten in 1936, and another at the 1938 Nitten.
In 1964 he made an extensive tour of Buddhist temples in Thailand, Burma, India and Ceylon. In 1991 he presented a prestigious solo exhibition of his work at the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art.
