Kôichi graduated in 1928 from the Kyoto Art School. During his time at the School he had also studied with Nishimura Goun (1877-1938). In 1948 he was one of the founders of the Sōzōbijutsu, “Creation of Art”, the so called “Sō gakai”. In 1960 he became a professor at the Kyoto City University of Arts.
