The poem reads: いさましく、先あらそひし、大丈夫の、こまわたしつる、宇治の大川。

Sasaki Haruko was born into a Samurai family in Iyo (today Ehime Prefecture) the third daughter of a Sasaki Tei. In 1872 she married Tomioka Tessai.
