Kiyoshi was born in Nagoya. After he went to Kyoto he studied Kanô painting with Yoshikawa Hidenobu. Subsequently he studied the Tosa style with Tosa Mitsusada (1738-1806) and Yamato style with Tanaka Totsugen (1760-1823). From which he developed a delicate and most individual style.
With Motoori Norinaga (1730-1801) and Uematsu Arinobunhe also studied Japanology and with Shin Ken Sinology. He became an expert on ancient Japanese customs and manners.
