Surrounded with the esteem from his younger colleagues Mori Kansai became one of the major painters in Kyoto at the end of the 19th century.
Kansai was the son of an Ichida samurai and a member of the staunchly loyalist family and therefore in trouble with the bakufu (gouvernment).
His painting career started with Mori Tetsuzan (1775 -1841) who adopted him after having recognized his talents. In the early Meiji era he opened a school where he taught Maruyama-Shijô traditions and helped founding the Jounsha.
