In 1911 he started as a pupil of Kaburagi Kyokata (1878-1973) and issued his first woodblock print the following year. In exhibitions his early works won numerous awards, and he accepted a post at the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun to supply illustrations for newspapers.
