Riken was born in Yoshinogawa Tokushima Prefecture. He went to Kyoto. In 1918 he studied with Ikeda Shunsho and Kaino Kozan. In 1924 He won his first prize at the Nihon Nangain and in 1928 at the 9th Teiten with a painting of a waterfall, and again in in 1930.
