Kôyô was born in Kyoto where he studied with the Shijô painter Nakajima Yûshô (1837-1905), and at the age of fourteen with Takeuchi Seihô (1864-1942). Here he developed into a mature artist who regularly showed at the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions, art shows organized by the government.
