Tanami Gakushô was born in Matsusaka, Mie prefecture. He studied with Tanaka Jôshô, Kubota Beisen (1852-1906), Nomura Bunkyo (1854-1911) and Yamamoto Shunkyo (1871-1933). He worked in Tokyo.
