Sekiran was born in Nagoya. He was a retainer of the daimyo of Owari Province. He studied under Nomura Gyokkei (1785-1857), who was a servant as well as a student of Go Shun (1752-1811), and later in Kyoto under Yokoyama Seiki (1793-1865).
