Hakuin was born in Suruga Province (present-day Shizuoka prefecture). In 1883, when he was 17 years old, he went to Kyoto and became a pupil of Tanomura Chokunyû (1814-1907). Hakuin was a good landscape painter. His views in the Nanga style are similar to those of Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835) and Chokunyû. He was his master’s star pupil. Later, Hakuin established private painting schools in Kyoto and in the city of Hofu, Yamaguchi prefecture. He was also an expert on Tanomura school paintings.
